carriage road
Buggy-width scenic route
A carriage road is a road wide and smooth enough for horse-drawn vehicles, as opposed to narrower footpaths or rougher trails.
The term now often describes unpaved roads in parks or historic estates that preserve this older character: We walked along the carriage roads in Acadia National Park.
Some carriage roads prohibit motorized traffic.
