carpetbag

Fabric-covered travel bag

A carpetbag is a type of travel bag made from carpet fabric, popular in the 19th century.

The word survives mainly in carpetbagger—a derogatory term for an outsider who moves somewhere to exploit local opportunities, especially for political gain.

The original carpetbaggers were Northerners who went South after the Civil War: He was dismissed as a carpetbagger who didn't understand the district.
