hardcase

Unyielding difficult person

A hardcase is someone tough, stubborn, or difficult to deal with—a person who won't bend easily under pressure or persuasion.

The term can carry grudging respect for resilience or suggest someone who's simply obstinate and uncooperative: The detective had questioned plenty of hardcases who wouldn't talk.

In New Zealand and Australian usage, hardcase often means an amusing character or joker.
