card cloning
Magnetic stripe theft
Card cloning is the illegal copying of data from a credit or debit card's magnetic stripe or chip onto a blank card, creating a functional duplicate.
Criminals use skimming devices attached to ATMs or payment terminals to capture card information.
The cloned card can then make fraudulent purchases or withdrawals: Investigators traced the theft to a card cloning operation at a gas station.
