caffè americano

Espresso with water

Caffè americano is espresso diluted with hot water, producing a coffee similar in strength to drip brew but with espresso's flavor profile.

The name is Italian for "American coffee," supposedly from American soldiers in Italy who found straight espresso too strong.

Often shortened to americano: I'll have an iced americano.
