caesurae

Breaks in verse

Caesurae is the plural of caesura, a pause or break within a line of poetry, typically occurring near the middle.

The term comes from a Latin word meaning "to cut." In verse, caesurae create rhythm and emphasis: The strong caesurae in Anglo-Saxon poetry divide each line into two half-lines.

The anglicized plural caesuras is equally common.
