byes
Automatic round advancements
Byes is the plural of bye, a word with several meanings.
In sports tournaments, a bye lets a competitor advance without playing a round: Three teams got byes into the semifinals.
Bye is also the informal shortening of goodbye: We exchanged quick byes and headed off.
In cricket, byes are runs scored on balls that pass the batsman without being hit.
