burial society
Death expense collective
A burial society is a mutual aid organization whose members pay regular dues to ensure dignified funerals for themselves and their families.
These groups have historically served communities—particularly Jewish, African American, and immigrant populations—where members pooled resources against the considerable expense of death.
Some burial societies also maintain cemeteries or provide bereavement support.
