building society

Member-owned lender

A building society is a British financial institution owned by its members, traditionally focused on savings accounts and mortgage lending.

Similar to American credit unions and savings-and-loan associations, building societies originated to help members pool funds for home purchases.

Many have converted to conventional banks, but some retain their mutual structure: I got my mortgage through a building society.
