briquets

Grill fuel blocks

Briquets are compressed blocks of combustible material—typically charcoal dust, coal, or sawdust bound together—used as fuel for grills and stoves: Light the briquets about thirty minutes before cooking.

The uniform shape allows for consistent burning and easier stacking than irregular charcoal chunks.

Also spelled briquettes.
