briquet

Compressed coal block

A briquet (also briquette) is a compressed block of combustible material—charcoal dust, coal, sawdust, or other matter bound together for use as fuel.

Briquets burn more evenly and efficiently than loose material: We lit the charcoal briquets for the grill.

The word extends to any similarly compressed block: fuel briquets made from recycled paper.
