box plots

Quartile visualization charts

A box plot is a statistical graph showing the distribution of data through five key values: minimum, maximum, median, and the boundaries of the middle 50 percent (the first and third quartiles).

The "box" spans the middle half of the data, with a line at the median, while "whiskers" extend to the extremes.

Box plots excel at comparing distributions across groups: The box plots showed that salaries varied more in tech than in manufacturing.

Also called box-and-whisker plots.
