boresight

Weapon aiming reference

Boresight is the optical axis of a gun barrel or other aiming device—the line extending straight out from the bore.

To boresight a weapon is to align its sights with this axis, typically by looking through the barrel at a distant target and adjusting the sights to match: We boresighted the rifle before heading to the range.

The term extends to aligning any directional instrument, such as radar antennas or laser systems.
