beam-steering

Guiding light's path

Beam-steering is the technique of directing a beam of energy—typically radio waves, radar, or light—without physically moving the antenna or emitter.

This is usually accomplished electronically by adjusting the phase of signals across an array of elements, allowing rapid redirection: Phased array radar uses beam-steering to track multiple targets simultaneously.

The technology is essential in 5G networks, satellite communications, and lidar systems.
