bombazine

Black funeral textile

Bombazine is a twilled fabric, traditionally made from silk warp and worsted wool weft, though later versions used cotton.

The fabric has a slightly corded or ribbed texture and was historically produced in black for mourning clothes during the Victorian era.

She wore bombazine to her husband's funeral, as custom demanded.

The fabric fell out of fashion by the early twentieth century and is now rarely seen outside period dramas and historical novels.
