crape

Black grief band

Crape is a variant spelling of crepe, the thin crinkled fabric, but it appears almost exclusively in the context of mourning.

Black crape was traditionally worn or displayed as a sign of grief: a crape band on his arm, crape hanging from the door.

The word now sounds old-fashioned, largely replaced by crepe in all contexts.
