boletes

Spongy-capped mushrooms

Boletes are a group of fleshy mushrooms distinguished by spongy pores on their undersides rather than gills.

Many are prized edibles, including porcini.

Some boletes turn blue when cut or bruised.

The term comes from the Greek word for mushroom.

We found several king boletes along the trail.
