betony

Purple medicinal herb

Betony is a plant of the mint family, native to Europe, with spikes of purple flowers.

It was widely used in medieval herbal medicine, believed to cure everything from headaches to demonic possession.

The wood betony (*Stachys officinalis*) remains the best-known species.

Betony grew wild along the hedgerows.
