betadine

Surgical prep wash

Betadine is a brand name for povidone-iodine, an antiseptic solution used to disinfect skin before surgery or to clean wounds.

The brownish-yellow liquid stains skin temporarily but kills bacteria effectively: The nurse swabbed betadine on my arm before the injection.

Often used generically for any povidone-iodine product.
