benchtops

Where you chop

Benchtops are the horizontal work surfaces in kitchens and laboratories—what Americans usually call countertops.

The term is standard in British, Australian, and New Zealand English: We're replacing the old laminate benchtops with granite.

Benchtop as an adjective describes compact equipment designed to sit on a work surface rather than the floor: a benchtop drill press, benchtop centrifuge.
