battledore

Badminton's wooden ancestor

A battledore is a small wooden paddle used to strike a shuttlecock in an old game that preceded badminton.

The game itself, often called battledore and shuttlecock, involved keeping the shuttlecock aloft as long as possible rather than competing across a net.

The word also once referred to a wooden paddle used for beating laundry or a child's hornbook for learning the alphabet, though these senses are now obsolete.
