batiks

Indonesian dyed cloths

Batiks are fabrics decorated using a wax-resist dyeing technique.

Wax is applied to areas meant to remain undyed, the cloth is dipped in dye, and the wax is removed—repeated for multiple colors.

The method originated in Indonesia and produces distinctive patterns with characteristic fine cracks where dye seeps through the wax.

She brought back beautiful batiks from Java.
