barcarolle

Gondolier's rowing melody

A barcarolle is a song or instrumental piece with a gentle, swaying rhythm meant to evoke the movement of a gondola on Venetian canals.

The form originated with Venetian boatmen and was adopted by classical composers for piano pieces and opera scenes.

Offenbach's barcarolle from *The Tales of Hoffmann* is the most famous example.
