Bridge of Sighs
Prisoner's last crossing
The Bridge of Sighs is an enclosed limestone bridge in Venice connecting the Doge's Palace to the prison, named for the sighs of prisoners glimpsing their last view of the city before imprisonment.
The name has been borrowed for similar enclosed bridges elsewhere, notably at Cambridge and Oxford universities.
Figuratively, any passage to an unpleasant fate: He walked across his own bridge of sighs to the unemployment office.
