barcarole
Venetian boating melody
A barcarole is a traditional Venetian boat song, originally sung by gondoliers.
The term now refers to any musical composition in that style—typically in 6/8 time with a gentle, rocking rhythm that evokes the motion of oars through water.
Offenbach's barcarole from *The Tales of Hoffmann* is perhaps the most famous example.
