barberries
Spiny ornamental shrubs
Barberries are the small, tart red berries of shrubs in the genus Berberis.
They appear frequently in Middle Eastern cuisine, especially Persian rice dishes, where their sourness balances rich flavors: The rice was studded with barberries and saffron.
The shrubs themselves, also called barberries, are thorny and often planted as hedges.
