banyan trees
Spreading tropical giants
Banyan trees are fig trees distinguished by aerial roots that drop from branches and develop into secondary trunks, allowing a single tree to spread over enormous areas.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, a mature banyan can appear to be an entire grove.
The largest specimens cover several acres and can shelter thousands of people beneath their canopy.
