bait ball

Defensive prey cluster

A bait ball is a tightly packed spherical formation of small fish—anchovies, sardines, herring—created when a school is surrounded by predators.

The fish spiral inward defensively, which paradoxically makes them easier targets for dolphins, sharks, and diving birds attacking from all angles.

The whales took turns lunging through the bait ball.
