backronym
Invented letter meanings
A backronym is an acronym created after the fact by assigning words to existing letters.
Unlike true acronyms, where the phrase comes first and gets abbreviated, backronyms work backward—taking an established word or abbreviation and inventing a phrase to fit it.
Some are folk etymologies: the claim that "golf" stands for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden" is a backronym, not the word's actual origin.
Others are deliberate coinages: the USA PATRIOT Act was named to spell out a word.
