backronyms

Retroactive abbreviation meanings

A backronym is an acronym invented after the fact to fit an existing word.

Unlike true acronyms, where the abbreviation comes first, backronyms reverse-engineer words into phrases: GOLF becomes "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden" (a folk etymology); AMBER Alert becomes "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response." Some are official renamings, others are humorous inventions or false etymologies spread as fact.
