backorders

Pending inventory requests

Backorders are orders for goods that are temporarily out of stock but will be shipped when available.

A company with strong demand might have thousands of units on backorder.

To backorder something is to place such an order: The item was backordered for six weeks.

The term implies the customer is willing to wait rather than cancel.
