back light

Behind-subject light source

Back light (also backlight) is illumination from behind a subject, creating silhouettes or rim effects by placing the light source opposite the viewer.

In photography and film, back lighting separates subjects from backgrounds and adds dramatic depth: The back light gave her hair a golden halo.

As a verb, to backlight is to illuminate from behind.

A backlight is also the light source that illuminates screens on phones, monitors, and televisions from behind.
