back-engineering

Dissecting to understand

Back-engineering is the process of analyzing something—a product, system, or technology—to understand how it was made or how it works, typically to replicate or improve upon it.

The term is interchangeable with reverse engineering: They back-engineered the competitor's software to understand its encryption.

Common in manufacturing, software development, and intelligence work.
