axels
Forward-takeoff ice leaps
An axel is a figure skating jump: the skater launches from the forward outside edge of one skate, rotates in the air, and lands on the back outside edge of the other.
Unlike other jumps, the axel takes off while moving forward, adding an extra half-rotation.
A single axel is one and a half turns; a double is two and a half; a triple, three and a half.
Named for Norwegian skater Axel Paulsen.
