ashpit

Below the grate

An ashpit is a pit or chamber beneath a fireplace, furnace, or stove where ashes collect for later removal.

In steam locomotives, the ashpit sat below the firebox to catch cinders and clinker.

The term appears in older buildings and industrial contexts: He cleaned out the ashpit before lighting a new fire.
