artillerist
Heavy weapons specialist
An artillerist is a soldier who operates artillery—large-caliber weapons like cannons, howitzers, and missile systems.
The term is more formal than *gunner* and often appears in military history: Confederate artillerists positioned their batteries on the ridge.
Also called an artilleryman.
