Artificials are things that are artificial rather than natural.
In fishing, artificials are lures made to imitate baitfish or insects—plastic worms, rubber frogs, feathered flies—as opposed to live bait: I only use artificials when I'm fly fishing.
The term extends to other contexts where synthetic substitutes replace natural materials.
