artificial islands
Built-up water territories
Artificial islands are landmasses constructed by humans rather than formed by natural processes.
They're built by dredging, land reclamation, or piling materials in shallow water.
Some serve practical purposes—airports, military bases, expanded territory—while others are luxury developments or tourist attractions: Dubai's Palm Islands are artificial islands visible from space.
The term also applies to floating platforms designed to function as permanent land.
