coastal development
Seaside land transformation
Coastal development is the construction of buildings, infrastructure, and other human modifications along shorelines and oceanfront areas.
The term often carries environmental implications, appearing in discussions of habitat loss, erosion, and climate vulnerability: Coastal development has destroyed much of the wetland buffer that once protected the city from storms.
It encompasses everything from beach resorts to port facilities to residential subdivisions built on barrier islands.
