archipelagoes

Scattered oceanic landmasses

Archipelagoes is the plural of archipelago—a chain or cluster of islands, or a sea containing many islands.

The Greek Archipelago originally referred to the Aegean Sea, dotted with islands between Greece and Turkey.

Now any island group qualifies: the archipelagoes of Southeast Asia, the Hawaiian archipelago.

Also spelled archipelagos.
