amateur tournament
Nonprofessional competitive event
An amateur tournament is a competition in which participants are not paid professionals.
The distinction matters in sports like golf and tennis, where amateur status historically meant competitors couldn't accept prize money: She won several amateur tournaments before turning pro.
Amateur tournaments exist across domains from chess to fishing, typically organized by clubs or governing bodies.
