Non-Bitcoin digital currency
An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin—the term combines "alternative" and "coin." Thousands exist, from major currencies like Ethereum to obscure tokens: I put some money into altcoins hoping one would take off.
The term often carries connotations of speculation or risk compared to Bitcoin's relative establishment status.
