alpha-1 antitrypsin
Lung-protecting protein
Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a protein produced by the liver that protects the lungs from damage by enzymes released during immune responses.
A genetic deficiency of this protein leads to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which can cause emphysema and liver disease.
The condition is one of the most common inherited disorders among people of European descent.
