akee

Tropical soapberry relative

Akee is a tropical fruit native to West Africa, now closely associated with Jamaican cuisine.

The tree produces red pods that split open when ripe, revealing creamy flesh attached to large black seeds.

Only the fleshy arils are edible—the seeds and unripe fruit are toxic.

Akee and saltfish is Jamaica's national dish.

Also spelled ackee.
