Zimmermann Telegram
Mexico alliance proposal
The Zimmermann Telegram was a secret diplomatic communication sent in January 1917 by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to Mexico, proposing a military alliance against the United States.
Germany promised to help Mexico recover Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona if the U.S. entered World War I.
British intelligence intercepted and decrypted the message, and its publication outraged American public opinion, helping push the U.S. toward declaring war on Germany in April 1917.
