Zaporizhian Sich
The Zaporizhian Sich was a semi-autonomous Cossack polity centered on fortified encampments along the lower Dnieper River, in what is now southern Ukraine.
From the 16th to 18th centuries, it served as a military stronghold and governing body for Cossacks beyond the reach of Polish, Russian, or Ottoman control.
The Sich elected its own leaders and conducted raids, earning a reputation for fierce independence: The Zaporizhian Cossacks of the Sich answered to no tsar or king.
