Wounded Knee Massacre

1890 Sioux tragedy

The Wounded Knee Massacre was the 1890 killing of approximately 250-300 Lakota Sioux by U.S.

Army soldiers at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota.

It marked the effective end of armed Native American resistance to U.S. expansion.

The site became a symbol of government violence against Indigenous peoples, especially after the 1973 occupation by American Indian Movement activists.
