Sullivan's operatic partner
W.S.
Gilbert (1836–1911) was an English dramatist and librettist, best known for his comic operas written with composer Arthur Sullivan.
The Gilbert and Sullivan collaborations—including *The Mikado*, *H.M.S.
Pinafore*, and *The Pirates of Penzance*—defined Victorian comic opera and remain widely performed.
Gilbert's witty, satirical lyrics established templates for musical theater that influenced generations of lyricists.
