gondoliers
Venetian canal rowers
Gondoliers are the boatmen who row gondolas through the canals of Venice.
They stand at the stern, propelling and steering with a single oar in a distinctive rowing style.
The occupation is traditionally Venetian, passed through families, and gondoliers are often romanticized as singers serenading passengers: The gondolier navigated us through narrow waterways while singing Italian folk songs.
