Viking expeditions
Scandinavian seafaring campaigns
Viking expeditions were the seafaring journeys of Scandinavian Norse peoples from the late 8th to early 11th centuries—raids, trading voyages, and colonization efforts that reached from North America to the Byzantine Empire.
The term often emphasizes the military raids that terrorized coastal Europe: Viking expeditions devastated monasteries along the English coast.
These voyages also established trade routes and settlements in Iceland, Greenland, and briefly Newfoundland.
